Marcos Bezerra Cavalcanti was born in Natal, in the State of Rio Grande do Norte, on October 22, 1854, to Manuel Bezerra Cavalcanti and Josefa Lourença Cavalcanti.
He moved to Rio de Janeiro when he was 16, enrolled at the Mosteiro São Bento benedictine school for boys and was later admitted to the Rio de Janeiro College of Medicine. He defended a thesis called “On Hematocele” and graduated in 1878. Still a student, Cavalcanti received his first decoration: the Imperial Order of the Rose in the rank of Knight for his services rendered during the great yellow fever epidemic of 1876.
Shortly after graduating, Dr. Bezerra Cavalcanti established a private practice for two years in the city of Jundiaí in the State of São Paulo.
Dr. Bezerra Cavalcanti was sworn in as a Full Member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) on August 27, 1903, and in 1909 served as President of the institution. In 1928, he was honored with the title of Emeritus Professor and his memory lives on as Patron of Chair Number 34 of the ANM.
Furthermore, the renowned physician took on the roles of Lecturer and Head of Operations and, later on, led the Department of Clinical Surgery of the former Rio de Janeiro College of Medicine (currently, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ). He also worked as a surgeon and presided over the Santa Casa da Misericórdia and the Beneficiência Portuguesa Hospitals.
Alongside his peers Lucas Antônio de Oliveira Catta Preta, Hilário Soares de Gouvêa and Henrique Alexandre Monat, Dr. Bezerra Cavalcanti founded the Rio de Janeiro Medical and Surgical Society, of which he served as President in 1894. Moreover, he was a member of the Council of Higher Education and was further chosen to represent Brazil at the International Medical Congress in Lisbon and London, as well as at the World Cancer Congress in Paris.
Some of his main papers include “Colotomia Lombar e Colotomia Ilíaca” (“Lumbar Colotomy and Iliac Colotomy”), “Osteossarcoma no maxilar superior” (Osteosarcoma in the Upper Jaw”), “Cura Radical da Hérnia” (“Radical Cure of Hernias”), “Ferida Acidental do Cotovelo” (“Accidental Elbow Injuries”), and “Da Frequência do Cancro no Brasil” (“On the Prevalence of Cancer in Brazil”).
Dr. Marcos Bezerra Cavalcanti passed away on October 16, 1932, in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
