Marcus Túlio Bassul Haddad

The son of Alfredo Pádua Haddad and Amélia Bassul Haddad, Marcus Túlio Bassul Haddad was born on September 24, 1943, in the city of Cachoeiro de Itapemirim in the State of Espírito Santo. 

He enrolled at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) Faculty of Medicine, graduating in 1968. Shortly thereafter, Haddad interned at the same institution’s Internal Medicine class.

Still in UFRJ, the young medical student held the positions of Teaching Assistant in 1971 and Lecturer at the Department of Internal Medicine (Gastroenterology subject) in 1975. Afterwards, in 1983, he rose to the rank of Adjunct Professor, after having completed a Master’s degree in Gastroenterology four years before. 

Haddad was also in charge of several subjects taught at the university, such as Physiology, Pediatric Gastroenterology, Digestive Endoscopy and Dietetics. Also, he was responsible for organizing and teaching subjects in dozens of Lato Sensu (non-degree) graduate programs, in addition to having participated in numerous congresses, symposiums and conferences.

As a scholar, Dr. Haddad has published thirty-nine book chapters, helped to compile two books, and co-authored nearly 30 Brazilian as well as foreign medical journals. 

Furthermore, he translated the “Physiology of the digestive tract” book authored by Davenport, H.W. 3rd edition, Rio de Janeiro: Guanabara Koogan, 1978-238p. 

He additionally served as a Clinical Advisor to the Oncology group from 1969 to 1972, Assistant Professor at the Gastroenterology Clinic between 1969 and1972, and Clinician of the Intensive Care Treatment Center of the Brazilian Navy Hospital from 1969 to 1977. Haddad is currently a Visiting Professor at the Brazilian military’s Hospital Naval Marcílio Dias medical facility.

To further add to his extensive list of prestigious titles, Dr. Haddad held the position of Treasurer of the Rio de Janeiro Gastroenterology Association (AGRJ) for the 1982-1983 term, where, from 1992 to 1993, he additionally served as Secretary of the Ethics and Professional Defense Committee. 

In 1999, in turn, the physician was elected President of the Specialized Division of the World Gastroenterology Organisation (WGO). He is also a Member of the American College of Gastroenterology, Rio de Janeiro Association of Psychosomatic Medicine, and an Honorary Member of the Brazilian Organization of Crohn’s Disease and Colitis (GEDIIB).

The esteemed gastroenterology expert is additionally honored as a Full Member of the Brazilian Society of Hepatology (SBH); Full Member of the Franco-Brazilian Society of Medicine; Full Member of the Brazilian Society of Digestive Endoscopy; Collaborating Full Member of the Brazilian College of Surgeons (Gastroenterology Division); and Founding Member of the Brazilian Society of History of Medicine.  

During his candidacy for a Full Member seat at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Marcus Túlio Bassul Haddad submitted an essay titled “Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis.”
