Margareth Maria Pretti Dalcolmo

Margareth Maria Pretti Dalcolmo was born on June 21 in the city of Colatina in the State of Espírito Santo, to Miguel Archangelo Dalcolmo and Ormy Pretti Dalcolmo. 

She studied Medicine at the Santa Casa de Misericórdia School of Medicine in Vitória, graduating in 1978 and afterwards completing a medical residency in Pulmonology. Three years later, Dalcolmo obtained a Specialization degree in Sanitary Pulmonology from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), followed by a Ph.D. in Medicine (Pulmonology) from the Paulista School of Medicine of the Federal University of São Paulo (EPM/Unifesp) in 1999. 

Dalcolmo’s experience in the field of Pulmonology has helped her to both lead and relentlessly engage in clinical research protocols and treatment for tuberculosis as well as other mycobacteria (National Institutes of Health – NIH and the Global Alliance for TB Drug Development – TB Alliance).

Among her numerous accomplishments, Dr. Dalcolmo established and coordinated the Hélio Fraga/Fiocruz Reference Center Outpatient Service, in addition to presiding over said institution from 2009 to 2012. Moreover, she is a Full Member of a host of societies and committees worldwide, such as the Brazilian Ministry of Health’s National Technical Advisory Committee of the National Tuberculosis Program; Scientific Commission of both the Brazilian Society of Pulmonology and Phthisiology and the Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases (SBI); Global TB Network; and the RESIST-TB Steering Committee of the Boston Medical Center (BMC) since 2008. 

Dr. Dalcolmo was also part of the Task Force in New Treatments for Tuberculosis from 2011 to 2015, and since 2015, has composed the World Health Organization (WHO) Expert Group for Essential Medicines List. She is further affiliated with the World Bank’s Regional Advisory Council for tuberculosis-targeted health projects in Sub-Saharan African and occupational respiratory diseases.    

Currently, Dr. Dalcolmo serves as a faculty member at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro’s (PUC-Rio) postgraduate program and also runs and is a member of the Technical Chamber of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery of the Regional Council of Medicine of the State of Rio de Janeiro (CREMERJ). The celebrated physician and scientist holds experience in the area of Respiratory Diseases, with a focus on clinical research on tuberculosis as well as other mycobacteria. 

Dr. Dalcolmo occupies the role of Principal Investigator at both the Global Alliance for TB Research and the BRACE Trial responsible for examining whether the BCG vaccine is effective against COVID19. During the pandemic, she joined the Brazilian Ministry of Health’s advisory board, under Minister Luiz Henrique Mandetta’s term in office. 

From March to May 2020, she was one of the members of an advisory body to the State Government of Rio de Janeiro, as well as the Rio de Janeiro State Research Foundation (FAPERJ)-run ComCiência Group, also in Rio de Janeiro. Today, the renowned doctor and researcher writes a weekly column for the O Globo newspaper’s A Hora do Ciência (Science Time) section.    

Dr. Margareth Maria Pretti Dalcolmo was elected a Full Member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) on August 11, 2022, after submitting a paper titled “Nontuberculous Mycobacteriosis: Emerging Diseases. The Case of Mycobacterium Abscessus.” Her inauguration ceremony took place on October 21 of that same year, during which time she was greeted by fellow ANM Member Cláudio Tadeu Daniel-Ribeiro.
