Mario Barreto Corrêa Lima

The son of Ayder Corrêa Lima and Sara Barreto Corrêa Lima, Mario Barreto Corrêa Lima was born on September 7, 1935, in the city of Fortaleza in the State of Ceará. 

He enrolled at the now discontinued University of Brazil’s National College of Medicine (current School of Medicine of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ), graduating in 1959. He also obtained an undergraduate diploma in Political Science from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) in 1967 and a Bachelor of Education from the Estácio de Sá University in 2000. 

Corrêa Lima started his professional career serving as a Doctor at the Internal Medicine Department of the now shut down National Department for Rural Diseases (DNERu) from 1960 to 1961, and during that time frame, held the same position at the Internal Medicine Department of the Industrial Workers Retirement and Pensions Institute (IAPI). 

He also worked as a clinician in the Outpatient Department of the 7th Ward of the Santa Casa de Misericórdia General Hospital in Rio de Janeiro, where he additionally served as a Gastroenterology Consultant and Chief of the Medical Staff. Furthermore, Dr. Corrêa was appointed and served as Head of the National Cancer Institute (INCA) from 1969 to 1970, as well as Head of the Gaffrée Guinle Hospital’s Department of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases in 1983.

To further add to his impressive list of credentials, Dr. Corrêa Lima was nominated Head of the Rio de Janeiro Medical and Surgical School and International Relations Coordinator of the same facility. From 1975 to 1978, he led the Faculty of Medicine of Vassouras’s Clinical Medicine Department as well as its Internal Medicine Division for the 1977-1978 term. 

In 1971, the lauded physician was one of the eight founding members of Unimed, a nationwide health insurance organization, and was elected President of both the Brazilian Medical Association (AMB) and Rio de Janeiro’s Medical and Surgical Society.  

Additionally, Dr. Corrêa Lima amasses numerous prestigious titles and distinctions, including Full Member of the Brazilian Society of Gastroenterology and Nutrition; Active Member of the State of Guanabara – now, Rio de Janeiro – Society of Rheumatology; Full Founding Member of the Brazilian Society of Hepatology (SBH); Member of the Brazilian Society of Tropical Medicine; Full and Collaborating Member of the Brazilian College of Surgeons; and Associate of the Franco-Brazilian Society of Medicine (1974). Finally, he has been associated with the Medical Humanization Commission and the Federal Council of Medicine since 2009.   

Dr. Corrêa Lima has been a Full Member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) since 1985, having, throughout this time, served as an Official Speaker and Secretary-General on several of the institution’s boards. 

Upon running for full membership at the ANM, Dr. Mario Barreto Corrêa Lima submitted a dissertation entitled “Contributions to the Study of Paracoccidioidomycosis.”
