Maurício Augusto Silva Magalhães Costa

Maurício Augusto Silva Magalhães Costa was born on May 5, 1958, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, to Eurico Magalhães Costa and Maria Lygia Silva Magalhães Costa.

He pursued his medical studies at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro Faculty of Medicine (UFRJ), graduating in 1981.

In 2007, Magalhães Costa obtained Portugal’s equivalent to Brazil’s Bachelor of Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (FM-UL), subsequently being admitted to the Portuguese Order of Physicians (OMP). In 2015, he was awarded the Title of Specialist in Gynecology and Obstetrics from the aforementioned organization. 

Furthermore, Dr. Magalhães Costa secured a Master’s degree from the Institute of Gynecology (IG) of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1992 and completed an Executive Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Health at the Brazilian Institute of Capital Markets (IBMEC) in 2000/2001. From 1993 to 1997, he studied and earned a Ph.D. in Science from UFRJ, followed by a postdoctoral certificate from said institution Center of Health Sciences’ (CCS) Laboratory for Enzymology and Metabolism Control (LabECoM) in 2008.

The recognized physician worked in the joint Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) Institute of Social Medicine (IMS) program from 1978 to 1980.

Moreover, Dr. Magalhães Costa served at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) Parintins Advanced Campus in the State of Amazonas and later, under the role of Monitor, headed the Gynecological Cancer Prevention program at UERJ’s Production Center (CEPUERJ). Based on data collected during his time there, he authored a dissertation titled “Prevention of Gynecological Cancer in Parintins,” which earned him the Rondon Prize in 1981.

In addition, he worked as an intern in General Surgery at the Clementino Fraga Filho University Hospital (HUCFF) and as a resident in Gynecology and Obstetrics at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

To further add to his already extensive medical education, from 1983 to 1984 the physician finished an advanced course in Gynecological and Breast Oncology at the Radiumhemmet research center for radiotherapy and cancer of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.

Also in 1983, Magalhães Costa completed the annual Postgraduate Program in Oncology offered by the Rio de Janeiro-based Studies Center of the Beneficência Portuguesa Hospital.

He further led efforts to establish both the Gynecological Oncology Division and the Chemotherapy Outpatient Clinic at the Clementino Fraga Filho University Hospital (HUCFF) of Rio de Janeiro. For 32 years, he undertook several roles at its Gynecology Division, such as Medical Assistant, Scientific Coordinator, and Member of the Ethics Committee in Research in Humans at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) Faculty of Medicine. Finally, he was appointed as a Collaborating Professor at the institution’s undergraduate program, in addition to working as a reviewer for numerous other departments, among a host of other activities.

In 1989, Dr. Magalhães Costa founded the Clube da Mama, which for over 25 years held the title of Rio de Janeiro’s main breast cancer-related scientific discussion group.

Dr. Magalhães Costa holds membership to multiple medical societies both in Brazil and around the world, namely the Association of Gynecology and Obstetrics (Febrasgo); Brazilian Society of Mastology (Breast Cancer) (SBM); National Consortium of Breast Cancers (NCBC); American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO); European Society of Breast Cancer Specialists (EUSOMA); Brazilian College of Surgeons (CBC); and the International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS). 

In addition, he is a former member of the Executive Committee of both the Senologic International Society (SIS) and the Administrative Board of the American Society of Breast Disease (ASBD), served as President of the Latin American Federation of Mastology (Breast Cancer), and from 2019 to 2021, helmed the SIS institution. 

Magalhães Costa was also a Board Member of the International Gynecologic Cancer Society from 2016 to 2020 and Member of USA’s School of Oncoplastic Surgery Board; Member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Multidisciplinary Cancer Management Course (MCMC) Working Group in 2017; Member of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association; Member of the International Education Steering Group (ASCO) in 2019; and Head of the Brazilian College of Surgeons’ Mastology (Breast Cancer) Department from 2008 to 2017.  

Other titles awarded to the distinguished physician and scholar include International Delegate and Co-Chair of the Global Breast Care Committee of the National Consortium of Breast Centers; Co-Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Oncoplastic Surgery; Member of the Editorial Board of the European Journal of Breast Health; Editor of ecancer as well as the Spanish senology (breast care) and breast cancer-focused Revista de la Sociedad Española de Senología y Patología Mamaria medical journal; and finally, Reviewer of Knowledges Summaries of Comprehensive Breast Cancer Control of the BHGI, NCI and UICC organizations.

Furthermore, Dr. Magalhães Costa composed both the Advisory Board of the Latin American and Caribbean Society of Medical Oncology (SLACOM) and the Network of National Cancer Institutes and Institutions (RINC) in 2020, as well as serving as Coordinator of the Expert Committee on Breast Cancer of the Brazilian Ministry of Health’s Department of Strategic Programmed Actions. Other accomplishments include Member of the Brazilian College of Surgeon Journal’s Editorial Board, former General Editor of the Official Journal of the Brazilian Society of Mastology (Breast Cancer) (SBM), and former President of the commission for granting the tile of Specialist in Mastology (Breast Cancer) (TEMA). 

Dr. Magalhães Costa has also been prolific as an author, penning the following books: “Saúde dos Seios” (“Breast Health”) published by the Diagraphic publishing company; “Saúde e Beleza dos Seios” (“Breast Health and Beauty”); “Mais de Cem Respostas para suas Perguntas” (Over 100 Answers to your Questions” – Record publishing company); Plus de Cent Questions sur les Seins – (Eska – France), 2nd edition in 2015 by MA Éditions; “Câncer de Mama para Ginecologistas” (“Breast Cancer for Gynecologists”) in 1994; the “Guia de Saúde das Mamas” (“Handbook for Breast Health”) interactive ebook; “Aprenda a cuidar dos Seios” (“Learn how to Take Care of your Breasts”) by the Guanabara Koogan Publishing Company in 2015; and finally, the 2020 “Câncer de Mama – Tire suas Dúvidas” (“Breast Cancer – Clear your Doubts”) ebook published by Bibliomundi.

Throughout his prolific career, Dr. Magalhães Costa has amassed several distinctions and accolades, among them the Madame Durocher award granted by the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) in 1998 and 2003, as well as the Antônio Franco Montoro and the Lilly Breast Cancer awards. 

In his successful attempt to secure a Full Member position at the ANM, Dr. Maurício Augusto Silva Magalhães Costa presented an essay by the name of “Contralateral Prophylactic Mastectomy in Patients with Breast Cancer.”
