Mauricio Younes Ibrahim was born on October 20, 1958, in the city of Petrópolis in the State of Rio de Janeiro, to Jamil Boutros Ibrahim and Jorgette de Jesus Younes Ibrahim.
He graduated in Medicine from the Petrópolis Medical School in 1981. In 1989, the physician successfully completed a Master’s degree in Nephrology from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), after which time, in 1995, he obtained a Ph.D. from the French Université Pierre et Marie. Other positions included faculty member of the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UniRio) and Full Professor of Nephrology at UERJ’s Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM).
Ibrahim was granted scholarships from the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (CAPES-COFECUB); National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq); and France’s Foundation Pour La Recherche Médicale. Furthermore, he is a Researcher at the Rio de Janeiro State Research Foundation (FAPERJ) and serves as an Advisor to both the State of Pernambuco Research Foundation and the Araucária Foundation for Scientific and Technological Development of Paraná State (FA).
Other former positions held by Dr. Ibrahim include Head of the Department of Internal Medicine at the State University of Rio de Janeiro Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM-UERJ) and Coordinator of the III Clinical Medicine and Propaedeutics (General Pathologies) subject taught at the same institution. Also there, he served as both Coordinator of the Postgraduate Program in Nephrology and Professor of the Postgraduate Program in Clinical and Experimental Pathophysiology (FISCLINEX).
The physician and scholar additionally mentored Master’s and Graduate students and conducted research activities focused on metabolomics and lipidomics in chronic kidney diseases; leptospirosis pathophysiology and treatment; Na-K-ATPase pathophysiology and treatment; acute kidney injury; nephrotoxicity; and chronic kidney disease. He also ran the FCM-UERJ Integrated Nephrology Laboratory (LINN), leading research projects in the field of Cellular Pathology.
Some of the many memberships awarded to Dr. Ibrahim in acknowledgment of his contributions to medicine include Professor and Coordinator of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) Graduate Program in Nephrology and Full Member of both the Brazilian Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine (ABMR) and the State of Rio de Janeiro Academy of Medicine. Furthermore, he is a Member of the International Society of Nephrology and the European Dialysis and Transplant Association, as well as Head of the Acute Kidney Injury Committee of the Latin-American Society of Nephrology and Hypertension (SLANH).
The distinguished physician is also a Full Member of the Brazilian Society of Nephrology (SBN), was elected President of the Latin American Congress on Acute Renal Failure in 2000 and is part of the Organizing Committee of the International Society of Nephrology-led World Congress of Nephrology (WCN), which was held in Rio de Janeiro in 2007.
Additional former distinctions held by Dr. Ibrahim include President of the Association of Brazilian students and researchers in France (APEB-FR); President of the State of Rio de Janeiro Nephrology Society (SONERJ); and Vice-President of the Brazilian Society of Nephrology (SBN – Southeast Region).
Finally, he served as Head of the Physiology and Pathophysiology Department; Head of the aforementioned SBN Department of Acute Kidney Injury; and Member of the nephrology-dedicated Technical Chamber of the Regional Medical Council of Rio de Janeiro (CREMERJ).
During his candidacy for a Full Member position at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Mauricio Younes Ibrahim submitted an essay entitled “Contribution to the Study of Lipidomics in Acute and Chronic Kidney Injury: Effects of Hemodialysis and Kidney Transplantation.”
