Milton Ary Meier

Born on July 30, 1932, in the city of São Paulo in the State of São Paulo, Milton Ary Meier graduated in Medicine from the now defunct University of Brazil National College of Medicine (current Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ) in 1960. As a medical student, he served as a monitor for the Anatomy subject as well as an Academic Assistant in Medicine, during which time he worked alongside Paulo Pernambuco at the Carlos Chagas Hospital. 

Shortly thereafter, Meier, alongside fellow physician Josias de Freitas, went on to complete a medical internship in Surgery at the Hospital Moncorvo Filho in a subject taught by Professor Alfredo Monteiro, as well as at Hospital Silvestre, where from 1960 to 1961 he pursued a residency in the area of Surgery together with his peers Ary Frauzino Pereira and José Hilário.

Dr. Meier earned a Master’s degree from the University of Illinois in the United States, a Ph.D. from the University of Brazil (now UFRJ) and later joined the faculty of the Gama Filho University in Rio de Janeiro. During his 31-year spell at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), the physician held various positions, including Lecturer, Adjunct Professor, and Chief Surgeon of the Cardiovascular Surgery Department.

In 1963, Meier took on the role of resident at the Casa de Saúde São Miguel health center, first under the guidance of Fernando Paulino, and later, supervised by Domingos Junqueira de Moraes, one of Brazil’s leading pioneers when it comes to cardiac surgery, with whom he kept working until 1968.

Moreover, Dr. Meier was admitted to the Educational Council for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) and granted a scholarship from the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (Capes), in addition to having worked as a Resident in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Chicago-based University of Illinois Hospital in the United States from 1968 to 1972. There, he reported to physicians David Long and Lloyd Nyhus. 

At the end of his medical residency in 1972, he was granted internships at several institutions, namely the Mayo Clinic’s Cardiovascular Surgery Department under clinician Dwight MacGoon; Boston Children’s Hospital under Aldo Castañeda; University of Alabama under John Kirklin; and Houston’s Texas Heart Institute under Dr. Denton Cooley. 

Furthermore, Dr. Meier served as Head of the Aloysio de Castro State Institute of Cardiology (IECAC); National Institute of Cardiology (INC); the Brazilian military’s Marcílio Dias Naval Hospital; and the Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Service at the cardiology-focused Hospital Pró-Cardíaco, all of them in the city of Rio de Janeiro. 

To further add to his impressive credentials, from 1988 to 1989 Dr. Meier served as Secretary-General, and later, as President of the Brazilian Society for Cardiovascular Surgery (SBCCV) for the 1990-1992 term. There, he put in place an examination for the Brazilian Medical Association (ABM)-certified Title of Specialist in Cardiovascular Surgery.

The lauded surgeon is also a Member of 29 Surgery, Cardiology, and Cardiovascular Surgery-related societies in Brazil as well as overseas. Some of them include the American Association for Thoracic Surgery; American College of Surgeons; Society of Thoracic Surgeons; American College of Chest Physicians; and the Brazilian College of Surgeons. 

Moreover, Dr. Meier is both a Full Member and Emeritus Member of the Brazilian Society of Cardiology (SBC); Full Member and Emeritus Member of the International Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons; Member of the Brazilian Society of Cardiovascular Surgery; Full Member and Emeritus Member of the Latin Society of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery (SLCCCP); Fellow of The World Society for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery; and finally, a Member of the Brazilian Academy of Military Medicine.

In addition, the surgeon, scholar and ANM Member composes the Editorial Board of major medical journals in the field and participated in thirty-nine examination boards to approve Master’s and Doctorate candidates and College Professor titles across nine Brazilian universities. 

Dr. Meier has further authored and coauthored hundreds of scientific papers in both domestic and international medical journals, presented articles, participated in round tables and workshops, and lectured in over four hundred conferences in Brazil, South and North America, Europe, and Asia. 

During his 50 years of relentless dedication to the area of cardiovascular surgery, Dr. Meier has performed or participated in over 8,000 cardiac surgeries, 80% of them conducted on children. In the numerous departments he headed throughout his career, he helped fifty-five cardiothoracic surgeons to attain the title of Specialist, of which eleven currently lead departments in medical institutions throughout Brazil, as well as in Peru, Guatemala, and Malaysia. 

In his submission for Full Membership to the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Milton Ary Meier shared an essay titled “Arterial Switch Operation.” He was greeted at the ANM by fellow Academy Member Adib Domingos Jatene, while the Reception Committee consisted of members Marcos Fernando de Oliveira Moraes, Paulo Niemeyer Soares Filho, Luiz Cesar Póvoa, Rubem de Andrade Arruda, Henrique Murad and Pedro Monteiro Sampaio.
