Octavio Pires Vaz

The son of Octavio Freitas Vaz and Maria de Lourdes Pires de Castro Vaz, Octavio Pires Vaz was born on December 28, 1944, in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the State of Rio de Janeiro. 

In 1972, he graduated in Medicine from the School of Medicine and Surgery of Rio de Janeiro, later earning a Master’s degree from the U.S. University of Illinois Chicago in 1987. He would then obtain two specialization certificates: the first one in General Surgery from the Brazilian College of Surgeons (CBC) in 1976; and the second, from the Regional Council of Medicine (CRM). 

In 1997, Pires Vaz completed two additional specialization programs in Surgical Oncology in the fields of General Surgery and Videoendoscopic Surgery at the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education. In 2010, he secured yet another specialization certificate from the European Institute for TeleSurgery.

During his undergraduate studies in Medicine, he served as an intern in the Internal Medicine subject taught at the Rio de Janeiro School of Medicine and Surgery, under the leadership of Professor Jacques Houli, and as a trainee in the Rio de Janeiro Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital’s Department of General Surgery.

In 1976, after being approved in a diploma-based, admissions examination run by the Administrative Department of Public Service (DASP), Pires Vaz was appointed as a clinician at what is now the Hospital Federal de Ipanema in Rio de Janeiro. There, he served as Chief Surgeon of the Department of General Surgery, Head of the Medical Department, and Director-General.

Dr. Pires Vaz also amassed other roles throughout his successful career, including the position of Associate Professor at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UniRio) in 1992 and Researcher at the University of Illinois Chicago from 1985 to 1987. 

When it comes to accolades, the lauded physician was honored with the Strasbourg University-awarded Diplôme D’Université de Chirurgie Laparoscopique (University Diploma in Laparoscopic Surgery); Certificate in Robotic Surgery conferred by the Vinci System Training – Surgeon Console in 2012; and the U.S. AdventHealth Nicholson Center in Florida. 

For his significant contributions to Brazilian medicine, Dr. Pires Vaz was bestowed the Brazilian National Order of Merit during both the XXI International Symposium for updates on Gastroenterology and the XIV Gastroenterology and Proctology Congress in 2012.   

Additionally, he was a faculty member at Gama Filho University (UGF), working as a Lecturer in 1992 and as an Adjunct Professor in 1996.

Among the many titles that Dr. Pires Vaz garnered throughout his career, some include Fellow of the American College of Surgeons; Emeritus Member of the Brazilian College of Surgeons (CBC); Member of the Surgical Society of Oncology; Member of the Warren H. Cole Society in Chicago, USA, in 1987; and Member of the Rio de Janeiro Videolaparoscopy Society.

Finally, the recognized physician held the titles of both Vice-President and President of the Brazilian Ministry of Health-led Hospital de Ipanema’s Associação dos Médicos Residentes (Association of Resident Physicians).

In his inauguration ceremony as a Full Member at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Otavio Pires Vaz presented a paper named “Surgical Treatment of Oropharyngeal Dysphagia.”
