Omar Lupi da Rosa Santos

Omar Lupi da Rosa Santos was born on July 31, 1967, in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the State of Rio de Janeiro.

He graduated in Medicine from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) in 1990, and five years later, earned a Master’s degree in Medicine, specializing in the area of Dermatology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Later on, he would go on to obtain a Ph.D. in Medicine, also with a focus on Dermatology, from both UFRJ and the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in the United States from 2001 to 2002.

Since 2004, he has held the prestigious title of Associate Professor at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UniRio), where he additionally serves as an Adjunct Professor. 

Santos is also a Collaborating Researcher at BioVasc; UERJ; Permanent Faculty Member at the UFRJ Postgraduate Program in Internal Medicine; and Full Professor at the Carlos Chagas Postgraduate Medical Institute. Moreover, the clinician holds the position of Head of Dermatology at the General Polyclinic of Rio de Janeiro (PGRJ).

Dr. Omar Santos also holds the title of President of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD) for the 2009-2010 term, after fulfilling numerous roles in the organization. He currently serves both as an editorial staff member and as a peer reviewer in various Brazilian and international medical journals, among which the most prominent include the International Journal of Dermatology; Annals of Brazilian Dermatology; Mycoses in Berlin, Germany; Clinical and Experimental Dermatology; and the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. 

Within the realm of medicine, the esteemed dermatologist focuses his medical practice on the field of Dermatology, working mostly in the following areas of expertise: herpes simplex; skin cancer; herpesvirus infections; dengue fever; hemorrhagic viruses; viral skin infections; microcirculation; and protein conformation-related diseases.

In 2007, Santos was honored with the American Academy of Dermatology-awarded Members Making a Difference distinction for his contributions to the field. Furthermore, he was acknowledged by the Latin American College of Dermatology (CILAD) for his research on the Gorlin-Goltz Syndrome, in addition to an accolade conferred by the International Society Scholarship-helmed XI World Congress of Dermatology. Finally, as a scholar, Dr. Santos has over eighty papers published under his name in Brazilian as well as in foreign medical journals. 

Among the multiple memberships and positions Dr. Santos has amassed throughout his prolific career, he served as Vice-President of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD), from 2007 to 2008, and was appointed as Brazil’s Representative Delegate to the International League of Dermatological Societies (ILDS) from April 2007 to October 2011. He also occupied the role of Vice-President of the Associação Brasileira de Pesquisa com Células-Tronco e Engenharia Tecidual (Brazilian Association of Research with Stem Cells and Tissue Engineering – LACERT) from January 2008 to December 2009.


To top off the dermatologist’s achievements, he served as President of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD) from January 2009 to December 2010 and was part of the History Committee of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) between November 2004 to July 2009. Finally, as of September 2007, Dr. Omar Lupi da Rosa Santos has held the title of Full Member of the Academia Fluminense de Medicina (Academy of Medicine of Rio de Janeiro).
