The son of Antônio Marques Vieira and Maria Rosa de Almeida Vieira, Orlando Marques Vieira was born on November 29, 1932, in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the State of Rio de Janeiro.
In 1956, at the age of twenty-four, he graduated from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) Faculty of Medicine, where he also pursued a Residency in General Surgery and later, in 1965, became a Doctor of Medicine. That same year and also at UFRJ, Vieira rose to the rank of Associate Professor of General Surgery, and four years later, of Clinical Surgery.
Shortly thereafter, the surgeon was approved in a diploma-based, admissions examination to join the Ministry of Health as a Medical Officer and would later go on to hold several positions in the institution’s Hospital Organization Department.
Dr. Vieira chose to specialize in General Surgery and Gastrointestinal Surgery, areas of expertise in which he published a host of experimental scientific papers, among them, the two-volume “Clínica Cirúrgica – Fundamentos Teóricos e Práticos” (“Surgical Practice – Theoretical and Practical Foundations”) book. The recognized surgeon spent his career working at the same Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) college from where he graduated, serving as a Full Professor of Surgical Practice as well as Head of the Surgery Division, until 2002.
Dr. Vieira accrued a host of positions throughout his successful career, having worked as Head of the Surgery Division at two important Brazilian public hospitals, namely the Paulino Werneck Hospital from 1986 to 1992; and the Clementino Fraga Filho University Hospital from 1994 to 2002. He forcibly stepped down in 2002 after reaching the maximum years in office provided for under UFRJ’s regulations. Three years later, in June, the educational facility’s University Council honored the clinician and scholar with the title of Emeritus Professor of its Faculty of Medicine.
He further held the position of President of both the Rio de Janeiro Society of Gastroenterology Society, for the 1976-1977 term, and the Brazilian College of Surgeons from 1992 to 1999. In addition, Dr. Vieira was a Founding Member of the Brazilian Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery (SBACV); Full Member of the Brazilian Society of Gastroenterology; Full Member of the Collegium Internationale Chirurgiae Digestivae; Honorary Member of the Amazonas State Academy of Medicine; Corresponding Member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Spain; and finally, a Member of the International College of Surgeons.
Dr. Vieira was additionally awarded the Brazilian College of Surgeons distinction in 2004, the highest accolade conferred by said institution to individuals who have made significant contributions to teaching, advancements, and developments in the field of surgery. The CBC, as it is also known, further granted him the José de Mendonça tribute in 1984; Oscar Alves badge of honor in 2001; and the Emeritus Member medal. Furthermore, he is an Ex-officio Member of the aforementioned institution’s Higher Council and received the Fernando Vaz award in 1985.
The surgeon was actively engaged in several UFRJ Faculty of Medicine commissions and examination boards, in addition to having served as Vice-Dean of the institution’s postgraduate program from 1992 to 1995.
While running for a Full Member seat at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Orlando Marques Vieira submitted a dissertation titled “Incomplete Vagotomy Surgery.”
There, he was also appointed several roles, such as Treasurer from 1997-1999; Secretary-General for two terms, more specifically from 1999-2001 and from 2003-2005; and finally, Vice-President, a position he held from 2007 to 2009.
