Oswaldo Moura Brasil do Amaral Filho

Oswaldo Moura Brasil do Amaral Filho was born on February 9, 1948, in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the State of Rio de Janeiro.

Appointed on April 19, 2012, he took office as a Full Member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) on June 12 of the same year and was assigned Chair Number 31. The essay Dr. Moura Brasil Filho submitted upon his induction to the ANM was named “Results of Pars Plana Vitrectomy for the Treatment of Complications of Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy: Type 1 vs. Type 2.”

Moura Brasil Filho is the great grandson of the patriarch of the Moura Brasil family, widely known in Brazil for its expertise in the field of Ophthalmology as well as for its famous eye care products. The family tradition in ophthalmology includes 14 ophthalmologists spanning across five generations.

He graduated in Medicine in 1971 from the Medical School of Gama Filho University (UGF), where he went on to complete an internship as well as a medical residency in Ophthalmology, under the guidance of Professor Luiz Eurico Ferreira. Moura Brasil Filho then furthered his surgical training in the areas of retina and vitreous at the Ophthalmology Service, Retina Associates, under the helm of Professor Charles Schepens at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston in the United States.

To complete his medical education, Dr. Moura Brasil Filho holds a Master’s degree in Ophthalmology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and was granted the title of Specialist from both the Brazilian Medical Association (AMB) and the Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology.

He currently works as an Adjunct Professor at the Rio de Janeiro State Judiciary School (Emerj); Head of the University Gama Filho (UGF) Ophthalmology Service; Professor of the Brazilian Society of Ophthalmology/Estácio de Sá University Postgraduate Program, as well as Coordinator of the Retina and Vitreous subject taught at that institution. 

In 1990, Dr. Moura Brasil Filho partnered with a number of collaborators to publish the “Vitreous – Clinical Practice and Surgery” book, the first of its kind to address the subject in Brazil and published by the Cultura Médica publishing house.

He also penned two thesis: “Vitrectomia Via Pars Plana” (“Vitrectomy through Pars Plana”), which he submitted upon running for full membership at the Brazilian College of Surgeons (CBC); and “Avaliação do Tratamento Cirúrgico Vítreo-Retiniano em Diferentes Apresentações Clínicas de Vítreo-retinopatia Proliferativa” (“Evaluation of Vitreoretinal Surgical Treatment in Different Clinical Presentations of Proliferative Vitreoretinopathy”), presented to the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ)’s Faculty of Medicine to earn a Master’s degree, which were the two first papers on proliferative vitreoretinopathy surgery published in Brazil. 

Dr. Moura Brasil Filho additionally served as Technical-Director of the Retina and Vitreous Department of the Rio de Janeiro-based Brazilian Institute of Ophthalmology (IBOL), where he has worked since 1971. 

Moreover, the lauded ophthalmologist founded, was elected Vice-President, and worked as a Surgeon at the Instituto Catarata Infantil (Child Cataract Institute), a non-profit organization aimed at offering free-of-charge congenital cataract surgeries to underprivileged children.

Dr. Moura Brasil Filho holds numerous titles in several eye care-related organizations, such as Emeritus Member and Former President of the Brazilian Society of Ophthalmology; Full Member and Former President of the Brazilian Society of Retina and Vitreous (SBRV); Full Member, Founder, and Former President of the Sociedade Brasileira de Trauma Ocular (Brazilian Society of Ocular Trauma); and Full Member of the Brazilian College of Surgeons (CBC).

To complete the ophthalmologist’s long list of memberships to both Brazilian and foreign organizations, he belongs to the Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology; American Academy of Ophthalmology; Pan-American Assn of Ophthalmology (PAAO); Retina Society, as an Emeritus Member; American Society of Retina Specialists; French Society of Ophthalmology (SFO); European Society of Retina Specialists (EURETINA); and the European Vitreo Retina Society, among others.

In turn, when it comes to accolades and honors, Dr. Moura Brasil Filho has received medals and certificates for his significant contributions rendered to the Brazilian Navy, in addition to the “Friend of the Navy” title. 
Sworn in as an Emeritus Advisor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro’s (UFRJ) Minerva Council, Dr. Oswaldo Moura Brasil do Amaral Filho is also a Member of the Regional Council of Medicine of the State of Rio de Janeiro (CREMERJ) Technical-Chamber of Ophthalmology. Finally, he was honored with the title of Honorary Member of the Brazilian Academy of Military Medicine.
