Paulo Henrique Murtinho Couto

Paulo Henrique Murtinho Couto was born on February 2, 1950, in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the State of Rio de Janeiro, to Bernardo Henrique de Nunes Couto and Maria Murtinho Couto.

In 1969, he passed Brazil’s Vestibular – the country’s public college admissions examination – in second place to study at the Medical and Surgery School (UniRio) and graduated in 1974. He would then go on to earn a Master’s degree in Medicine from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1979, specializing in Orthopedics and Traumatology, followed by a Ph.D. in Medicine from the same institution in 1987.

Dr. Murtinho Couto currently serves as an Adjunct Professor at the UFRJ Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, while in 1978 he worked as a Lecturer at the University of Paris in France, as well as an Associate Professor at England’s University of Oxford.

The esteemed surgeon finished first in a public admissions exam to take on the position of Head of the Miguel Couto Hospital intensive care unit’s Orthopedics and Traumatology Team, a role he fulfilled from 1975 to 1976. From 1990 to 1997, in turn, he served as Head of the Traumatology and Orthopedics Department at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro’s (UFRJ) University Hospital, whereas in 1997 he occupied the position of Coordinator of the Postgraduate Program in Orthopedics and Traumatology at the UFRJ Faculty of Medicine. 

To conclude the long roster of roles he amassed throughout his successful career, Dr. Murtinho Couto served as Coordinator of the Medical Residency Program in Orthopedics and Traumatology for two terms: 1984-1986 and 1989-1990; and as Head of the Traumatology and Orthopedics Clinical Practice led by Professor Nova Monteiro for six years. Finally, he has held the title of Full Professor of Orthopedics and Traumatology at the Carlos Chagas Postgraduate Medical Institute since 1991.

Some of the memberships Dr. Murtinho Couto holds to several societies both in Brazil and worldwide include the Brazilian Society of Orthopedics; Brazilian Hip Society, of which he also served as Secretary in 1992; and Foreign Assistant at France’s Hôpital de Paris medical institution. Moreover, he was designated as a Fellow of the British Orthopaedic Association at the Royal College of Surgeons of England; American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons; and the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology.

The lauded physician has penned four theses, in addition to having authored and coauthored seventy scientific papers, lectured in dozens of congresses, and composed forty-six examination boards. 

During his candidacy for a Full Member seat at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Paulo Henrique Murtinho Couto shared an essay by the name of “Unilateral Facet Cervical Dislocation: Treatment with the Roy-Camille Technique with Posterior Approach to the Cervical Spine and Osteosynthesis using Plates and Screws.”
