Paulo Hilário Nascimento Saldiva

Paulo Hilário Nascimento Saldiva was born on July 12, 1954, in the city of São Paulo in the State of São Paulo, to Manuel Saldiva Netto and Diva Nascimento.

He graduated in Medicine from the University of São Paulo School of Medicine (FMUSP) in 1977. It was in that same institution that two years later he chose to specialize in Medicine, followed by a Ph.D. in Pathology in 1983, upon successfully defending a final thesis titled “A Study on Respiratory Function in Small Animals: Uses and Study Methods.”

In 1986, Dr. Saldiva joined USP’s faculty after being awarded the title of Associate Professor preceded by his post-doctoral studies there in 1980.

Dr. Saldiva has served his entire career at the aforementioned University of São Paulo’s (USP) School of Medicine and since 1980 has worked as a Full Professor in its Department of Anatomic Pathology. Prior to that, he served as Head of the Laboratory of Pathological Anatomy, from 2009 to 2013, as well as the General Supervisor of the Bandeira Científica scientific extension program since 2006. 

In addition, from 2006 to 2009, he composed the Advisory Committee to USP’s Office of the Dean, entrusted with conducting research for the purpose of seeking funding for special projects. Nowadays, he constitutes the Board of the Department of Anatomical Pathology, a position he has occupied since 2005. Moreover, Dr. Saldiva serves as Head of the Laboratory of Experimental Air Pollution, as well as a Member of the Vivarium Commission.

In 2016, the esteemed physician and researcher was appointed as Head of USP’s Institute of Advanced Studies, and the following year, joined the Editorial Staff of both the Urban Climate and the Frontiers in Physiology medical journals.

Also, in 2004 Dr. Saldiva was admitted as a Member of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) Advisory Committee for biomedical-related research conducted at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp). 

In acknowledgment of his numerous and invaluable contributions to the field of medicine, Dr. Saldiva has amassed a number of awards and honors throughout his career, including the CAPES Thesis Award in 2014; Paul Donavon Kigar Award in 2011; Order of Dom Pedro I Award and Medal; and the Brazilian government-issued National Order of Scientific Order in the rank of Commander in 2010. Additionally, he is a Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences.

In his many years of scientific activities and publications, Dr. Saldiva has mentored sixty-one undergraduate research internship (URI) students and 34 Master’s and 67 Ph.D. candidates. He has 501 articles under his name, which were cited a total of 11,478 times, and focuses on the following research lines: anatomical pathology; pulmonary pathophysiology; respiratory diseases and environmental health; applied ecology; cities and human health; humanities, and finally, medical anthropology. 

Upon running for a Full Member position at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Paulo Hilário Nascimento Saldiva presented a paper named “Urban Biology: Dialogue between Health and Disease in the Streets of our Cities.”
