Paulo Marcelo Gehm Hoff

Paulo Marcelo Gehm Hoff was born on September 8, 1968, in the city of Paranavaí in the State of Paraná. 

He is a 1991 medical graduate from the University of Brasília (UnB), as well as a Ph.D. in Sciences from the University of São Paulo (USP) in 2007. 

Shortly afterwards, Hoff headed to the United States and completed a medical internship at the Jackson Memorial Hospital of the University of Miami, later earning a Specialization certificate in Hematology from the Baylor College of Medicine, as well as another Specialization title – this time in Oncology – from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

For seven years, Dr. Hoff received comprehensive and solid medical training in the U.S., after which time he started to focus on teaching and researching, subsequently being appointed as an Associate Professor as well as Vice-Chair of the aforementioned Texas-based institution’s Department of Gastroenterology, a position he held for several years. 

Upon returning to Brazil, the clinician and researcher was admitted to the School of Medicine of the University of São Paulo (USP) faculty as an Associate Professor followed by the role of Full Professor of Oncology at the same institution. 

In addition, Dr. Hoff served as Director-General of both the Cancer Institute of the State of São Paulo (ICESP) and the Sírio-Libanês Hospital’s Oncology Center. 

In his intensive academic activities, Dr. Hoff has over three hundred papers published under his name, with an h-index of 34. 

Furthermore, he serves as Vice-President of the Gastrointestinal Tumour Group led by the São Paulo State Department of Health (SES/SP) and as a Member of the University of São Paulo (USP) Assembly.

Hoff is a Member of numerous organizations, serving as a Board Member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and as President of the Scientific Commission in Surveillance of the Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa). Dr. Goff further holds the position of Head of the Colorectal Group of both the National Surgical Adjuvant Bowel and Breast Project’s (NSABP) and the Southwest Oncology Group, in addition to running the São Paulo-based Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein’s Center for Clinical Studies in Cancer (NECC). 

Among the many accolades and distinctions that he has received throughout his accomplished career, some particularly worthy of mention include Fellow of the American College of Physicians; Member of the Brazilian Society of Clinical Oncology (SBOC); Member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO); and Member of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO). 

During his campaign to become Full Member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Paulo Marcelo Gehm Hoff presented an essay titled “Evolution of the Clinical Treatment of Colon and Rectal Cancer.”
