Raul Cutait

Raul Cutait was born on March 18, 1950, in the city of São Paulo in the State of São Paulo.

He studied in several schools in São Paulo before enrolling at the School of Medicine of the University of São Paulo (USP), such as Elvira Brandão, São Luís, and Bandeirantes. At USP, he pursued medical studies and graduated in 1973, followed by a Master’s degree in Surgery from the same educational facility five years later. In 1987, Cutait would go on to earn a Ph.D., also in Surgery and at the same institution.

The young medical student completed his residency in General Surgery at the University of São Paulo Hospital das Clínicas (HMUSP) university hospital complex in 1975, whereas from 1976 to 1977, he pursued another residency in Digestive Surgery and Coloproctology, also at USP. He further served as a Research Fellow of Surgical Oncology of the University of Maryland Hospital in 1980, as well as a Research Fellow in Surgical Oncology of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center the following year, both of them in the United States.

Today, Dr. Cutait is a faculty member at the University of São Paulo’s School of Medicine, where he holds the prestigious title of Associate Professor as well as Associate Professor at the same facility’s Department of Surgery. 

In addition, the lauded surgeon was awarded the title of Professor Honoris Causa from the University of Iasi in Romania in 2003, as well as from the Bolivian University of Aquino in 2014.

He currently serves as a clinician at two prestigious Brazilian hospitals: the School of Medicine of the University of São Paulo’s Hospital das Clínicas (FMUSP) university hospital complex; and the Hospital Sírio-Libanês in São Paulo.

As a scholar, Dr. Cutait has eighty-six research papers and 128 book chapters published both in Brazil and abroad. Moreover, he has authored and/or edited fifteen books launched internationally on various subjects, such as colorectal cancer and hereditary colorectal cancer, among other surgery and health-related topics. Also, he has also penned over eighty articles in Brazilian newspapers, particularly in Folha de São Paulo, addressing health-related topics, in addition to having given more than three hundred lectures in the country and over two hundred lectures outside of Brazil.

Among the many former titles that Dr. Cutait has amassed throughout his accomplished career, some include President of the Brazilian Society of Coloproctology (SBCP) in 2004; Vice-President of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) from 2011 to 2013; General Director of the  International Society of University Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ISUCRS) for a two-year term ranging from 2014 to 2016; and 2nd Vice-President of the Latin American Association of Coloproctology (ALACP) from 2015 to 2017.

Furthermore, Dr. Cutait served as Secretary of Health for the City of São Paulo in 1993; President of the Hospital Sírio-Libanês’s Medical Council from 2001 to 2004; and Founder and Head of the Oncology Center of the aforementioned institution from 1998 to 2005.

In recognition of his significant contributions to the field of medicine, the recognized surgeon and academician has been awarded over fifteen national and international prizes, notably the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) award in 2001 for authoring one of the most cited research articles worldwide in the 1990s, which addressed all science-related areas conducted in Brazil. The same article holds the status of being the world’s most cited research article over the past 40 years to examine the topic of General Surgery in Brazil.

Among his many memberships to medical associations, Dr. Cutait is part of 19 Brazilian and seventeen international medical societies, and co-founder of both the Brazilian College of Digestive Endoscopy and the Brazilian Society of Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery (Sobracil), in addition to being honored with Chair Number 30 at the São Paulo Academy of Letters in 2010.

The surgeon has further been honored with the title of Citizen of five Brazilian states and the Government of Lebanon’s Commande D’Or distinction.

Dr. Raul Cutait has and continues to significantly contribute to various Social Responsibility Councils, namely the Comunidade Solidária since 1995; Fundação Itaú Social since 1993; Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo’s (FIESP) Social Responsibility Council, of which he served as a Member and President from 2015 to 2017; FIESP’s Health Productive Chain Council since 2008; and the Fundação Telefônica since 1999.

Other memberships include those of the Institute for the Development of Social Investment (IDIS) between 1999 and 2008; Mario Covas Foundation since 2002; and Friends Association of the São Paulo Museum of Sacred Art since 1998, in addition to the former title of one of the Patrons of the Municipal Theater from 1994 to 2005. He has also been a Member of Brazil’s Bach Philharmonic Foundation led by maestro João Carlos Martins since 2006, and finally, the OSESP Foundation since 2014.
