Raul David de Sanson

President of the National Academy of Medicine from 1947 to 1949

Raul David Sanson was born in Rio de Janeiro on February 16, 1887, to Henrique Pedro David de Sanson and D. Henriqueta David de Sanson.

He completed his studies in medicine at the Rio de Janeiro College of Medicine in 1909, after successfully defending a thesis titled “Lagrangian Surgery for Ocular Prosthesis.” 

While still a student, he worked as an Assistant at the Instituto Vacínico Municipal (Municipal Vaccination Institute) from 1906 to 1907 and interned at the Santa Casa de Misericórdia General Hospital, as well as at the Domingos de Góes e Vasconcelos, Silvio Moniz, Almeida Magalhães and Miguel Pereira hospital wards. Shortly afterwards, the recently graduated physician moved to Germany to attend classes in Hamburg and at Heidelberg University.

Following his return to Rio de Janeiro, Dr. Sanson specialized in the fields of otorhinolaryngology and ophthalmology along with Academy Member Hilário de Gouvêa, and in 1920, after being approved in a diploma-based civil service examination, he secured a position as a Professor at the National College of Medicine.

The physician and scholar then pursued further specializations in plastic surgery in Germany, and after coming back to Brazil for good, headed several Departments of Otorhinolaryngology in Rio de Janeiro, such as the General Polyclinic of Rio de Janeiro in the neighborhood of Botafogo, the São João Batista da Lagoa Hospital, the Nossa Senhora da Saúde Hospital, and the Gaffrée and Guinle University Hospital. 

Dr. Sanson was awarded the title of Full Member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) on October 15, 1925, after submitting a dissertation named “Considerations on Killian’s Intervention Method,” and rose to the ranks of Emeritus Professor in 1957. 

He held a host of positions at the ANM’s board of directors and was later elected its President, serving a term from 1947 to 1949. Furthermore, Dr. Sanson is a Patron of Chair Number 75 at the Academy’s Surgery Division. During his tenure as President, he successfully secured the donation of lands required to build the current headquarters of the ANM.  

In addition, Dr. Sanson served as a Full Professor of Otorhinolaryngology at the Colleges of Medicine of what are now the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). He was also a true pioneer in laryngeal cancer surgery treatment as well as a strong advocate for treating ethmoid and frontal sinuses based on an external approach.  

Among Dr. Sanson’s many accomplishments throughout his remarkable career, he founded and was Vice-President of the first board or directors at the Rio de Janeiro State Society of Otorhinolaryngology and was a member of several societies and organizations. These include the Rio de Janeiro Medical and Surgical Society, the Society of Dermatology and Syphilology, the Brazilian Society of Ophthalmology, Society of Neurology, Psychiatry and Forensic Medicine, and the French Broncho-Esophagological Society. 

The physician and Academician was also a Full Member of the Brazilian College of Surgeons and the International College of Surgeons and held the position of Corresponding Member of the Royal Belgian Society for Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, as well as being an Honorary Member of the Society of Medicine of Petrópolis and the Uruguayan Society of Otorhinolaryngology.

Dr. Sanson authored numerous academic papers and articles and collaborated with the Brazilian Journal of Surgery. He was also admitted to the Brazilian Press Academy as a partner in 1943. 

In 1950, the physician was decorated with the French Legion of Honor. 

Dr. Raul David Sanson passed away on August 10, 1962, in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
