Rossano Kepler Alvim Fiorelli

Rossano Kepler Alvim Fiorelli was born on March 12, 1963, in the city of Três Rios in the State of Rio de Janeiro, to Humberto Reis Fiorelli and Francisca Alvim Fiorelli, both of whom had Italian roots dating back to their grandparents. He had a humble upbringing, with his hard-working family earning a living through agriculture and trade.

He was accepted at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UniRio), after ranking second in its public college admissions exam, and graduated in 1988. National Academy of Medicine (ANM) Members Azor José de Lima and Carlos Alberto Basílio were his patron and mentor, respectively. He later earned his Master’s degree in Thoracic Surgery from the Federal Fluminense University (UFF) in 1997. 

In 2001, in turn, Fiorelli would go on to complete a Ph.D. in General Surgery at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro’s (UFRJ) Thoracic Surgery Department.

Shortly afterwards, he joined the faculty of the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UniRio) as an Associate Professor in Operating Technique and Experimental Surgery.

He then completed his Medical Residency in Thoracic Surgery at the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Department of Rio de Janeiro’s Beneficência Portuguesa Hospital, which is affiliated with the Thoracic Surgery Specialization Program offered at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio). It is led by Professor Jesse Pandolpho Teixeira, deemed a Master of Thoracic Surgery in Brazil as well as one of the world’s most renowned thoracic surgeons.

In 1990, Dr. Fiorelli finished first in a diploma-based, admissions examination to start working as a Thoracic Surgeon at the Rio de Janeiro State Health Department, consequently joining the Emergency Division of the Getúlio Vargas State Hospital (HEGV), under the guidance of Professor Levão Bogossian.

He was appointed as a Full Professor at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro’s (UniRio) Department of General and Specialized Surgery, after being approved in another public enrollment exam in 2002. There, he was also designated as Coordinator of both the Medical Residency Program in General Surgery and the Lato Sensu (non-degree graduate program) Program in the same area of expertise. In 2013, in turn, his peers elected him Head of the Department of General and Specialized Surgery, and he also started serving as Associate Dean of UniRio’s School of Medicine and Surgery.

Also starting from 2013, Dr. Fiorelli has held the position of Full Professor of Clinical Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Vassouras, or Severino Sombra University (USS). That same year, he was appointed as Coordinator of the Specialized Clinical Surgery subject taught at the Estácio de Sá University Faculty of Medicine.

Some of the many accolades that Dr. Fiorelli garnered throughout his distinguished career include the Barão Ribeiro de Sá medal conferred by the city of Três Rios City Council in 2009; Tiradentes Medal given by the State of Rio de Janeiro Legislative Assembly in 2010; Pedro Ernesto Medal from the State of Rio de Janeiro City Council in 2012; and the Title of Distinguished Citizen of the State of Rio de Janeiro in 2010.

The physician’s academic contributions include four theses; four final research papers; fifty papers published in Brazilian and foreign medical journals and in medical annals; and two book chapters and one self-authored book, in addition to 215 participations in congresses, conferences and workshops. 

Furthermore, Dr. Fiorelli is a Full Member of the Brazilian College of Surgeons and also holds membership to the State of Rio de Janeiro Pulmonology Society; both the Brazilian and the South American Thoracic Surgery societies; and the Pan-American Trauma Society.

In his induction ceremony as a Full Member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Rossano Kepler Alvim Fiorelli shared a paper named “Plunging Goiter: Results of 166 Surgically Treated Cases.”
