Rubens Belfort Mattos Junior

President of the National Academy of Medicine from 2020 to 2021

Rubens Belfort Mattos Jr., elected in February 1999, was sworn in as a Full Member on May 25, 1999, to occupy Chair Number 64, which belonged to Henrique Guedes de Mello – Surgery Division, following the passing of Carlos Paiva Gonçalves.

He submitted a dissertation called “Phacoemulsification of Cataract and Intraocular Lens Implantation in Uveitis” in 1998 to the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) and was welcomed at the ANM by Academy Members Luiz Cesar Póvoa, Paiva Gonçalves Filho, and Oswaldo Ramos.

His areas of expertise are clinical and ophthalmologic surgery.

Born in São Paulo, in Brazil, Rubens Belfort Jr. completed his undergraduate studies in medicine in 1970 at the now extinct Escola Paulista de Medicina (São Paulo State School of Medicine – EPM), currently the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP), where he also specialized in ophthalmology. He concluded a Master’s in Microbiology and Immunology and later obtained a Ph.D. in Sciences in the field of immunology. 

In 1985, he was selected for a Doctorate program in medicine (ophthalmology) offered by the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). In addition, he is a former Fellow at the Proctor Foundation of the University of California and a Visiting Scientist at the National Eye Institute (NIH). In the 1990s, he concluded an MBA program at FEA/USP.

He held several positions at EPM, including those of Lecturer; Adjunct Professor; Associate Professor; Residency Coordinator; Coordinator of the Graduate Program; Professor of subjects; and Head of the Department of Ophthalmology, in addition to being a Member of EPM’s Assembly and UNIFESP’s Board. He has been a Full Professor of Ophthalmology since 1981. In the 1970s and 1980s, Dr. Belfort Mattos Jr. held the position of Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Jundiái in the State of São Paulo.

He was bestowed the title of Grand Officer of the National Order of Scientific Merit, granted by the Office of the President of Brazil. 

Additionally, Dr. Belfort Mattos Jr. is a Level 1-A certified Scientist of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq).
