Rui Haddad

The son of Orlando Haddad and Rosa Haddad, Rui Haddad studied Medicine at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and graduated in 1972. He completed his Medical Residency in General Surgery at Rio de Janeiro’s Military Police Hospital (HPM-RJ) in 1973, and four years later, finished another Residency, this time in Thoracic Surgery at the Beneficência Portuguesa Hospital. In 1983, in turn, he went on to earn a Master’s degree in Surgery from UFRJ’s Postgraduate Program in Medicine.

Haddad then specialized and was appointed a Clinical and Research Fellow in Thoracic Surgery and Thoracic Surgical Oncology at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine in Canada, where he remained from 1983 to 1984. To top off his medical education, he earned a Ph.D. in Surgery from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) Faculty of Medicine’s Postgraduate Program in Surgery in 1996.

Dr. Haddad has held the position of Full Professor at the Thoracic Surgery Program of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro’s (PUC-Rio) medical graduate course since 2004, where he additionally serves as a Member of the Ethics and Research Committee and is in charge of the Regional Council of Medicine of the State of Rio de Janeiro-led (CREMERJ) Technical Chamber of Oncology. He worked there for 10 years as a Full Advisor, and during this time, was elected Vice-President for two terms of 15 months each.

As an academician, Dr. Haddad reviews scientific articles for the McMaster Online Rating of Evidence (MORE) and collaborates with numerous medical journals, including the Brazilian Journal of Pulmonology, Latin American Journal of Nursing (RLAE), and the Interactive Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Moreover, he is part of Editorial Boards of the European Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery; Journal of The Brazilian College of Surgeons (CBC); and the Rio de Janeiro-based Brazilian Journal of Videoendoscopic Surgery.

The renowned physician and scholar is also a Full Member of the Ethics Council of the Brazilian Society of Thoracic Surgery (SBCT) and was honored with the title of Emeritus Member of the Brazilian College of Surgeons, as well as with the distinction of Specialist Full Member of the Brazilian Society of Thoracic Surgery, where he previously served as both Secretary-General and Vice-President for two terms each.

To further add to his extensive list of titles and memberships, Dr. Haddad composes the Brazilian Society of Clinical Oncology (SBOC); American Thoracic Society (ATS); Brazilian Society of Pulmonology and Phthisiology (Tuberculosis and Respiratory infections); International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer; Cardiothoracic Surgery Network (CTSNet); and the Chest Wall Interest Group. 

In addition, he was appointed as a Fellow of several institutions, such as the American College of Chest Physicians; International Academy of Chest Physicians and Surgeons; European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery; and the Society for Thoracic Surgeons (STS).

For 32 years, Dr. Haddad was a faculty member at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro’s (UFRJ) Department of Surgery. He retired in 2011 after reaching the maximum number of years in office provided for under the Brazilian legislation
Since July 1st, 2014, Dr. Rui Haddad has composed the Editorial board of the European Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, as well as serving as a collaborator to the Brazilian Journal of Pulmonology; University of São Paulo (USP)-edited Clinics medical journal; Latin American Journal of Nursing; and, finally, the Interactive Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery journal.
