Rui Monteiro de Barros Maciel

Rui Monteiro de Barros Maciel was born on October 30, 1945, in the city of São Paulo in the State of São Paulo, to Péricles Maciel and D. Lúcia Nair Monteiro de Barros Maciel.

He graduated in Medicine in 1970 from the Paulista School of Medicine of the Federal University of São Paulo (EPM/Unifesp) where, from 1971 to 1974, he pursued his medical residency in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology. Shortly thereafter, from 1975 to 1976, he finished a Master’s program in Immunology, followed by a Ph.D. in Endocrinology in 1982 at the same institution. 

There, he would rise to the prestigious rank of Associate Professor, in addition to the position of Full Professor, which he held from 1992 to 1996, and Senior Full Professor, granted to him in 2016. 

Outside of Brazil, he worked in the United States, conducting research studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, from 1976 to 1978, and serving as a Visiting Professor at the Harvard Medical School/Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center for the 1986-1988 term. 

As a researcher, Dr. Barros Maciel has penned over 220 full articles published in indexed medical journals, more than 120 book chapters, edited six books and supervised 27 Master’s and thirty-two doctoral theses.

Among his numerous works, some particularly worthy of mention include papers showing the peripheral conversion of T4 (thyroxine) to T3 (triiodothyronine) on the cell membrane (Endocrinology, 1979); evidencing the autocrine production of IGF (insulin-like growth factor) by the thyroid gland (J Clin Invest, 1988); describing susceptibility genes for thyrotoxic periodic paralysis in potassium channels (Cell, 2010, and Nature Reviews, 2011), as well as contributions to laboratory endocrinology (Clin Chem, 1998, J Clin Endocrinol Metab 2000, and 2016).

At the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp), he was entrusted with the task of supervising resident doctors and also held several positions there, namely Member and President of the Medical Residency Committee; Deputy Chief of the Department of Medicine; and Head of the Endocrinology subject. 

Furthermore, Dr. Barros Maciel was part of the Associate Professor Committee and served as a Research Coordinator at the institution’s Assistant Dean’s Office for Postgraduate Studies and Research department and as Assistant-Dean of Postgraduate Studies and Research programs. 

Throughout his highly accomplished career, Dr. Barros Maciel was honored with several distinctions, including the National Academy of Medicine-issued (ANM) Múcio de Athayde Cancer Prize in 1985; LATS-Prize from the Latin American Thyroid Society (LATS) in 1991; São Paulo State branch of the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (SBEM) honor in 2001; National Order of Scientific Merit in the rank of Commander in 2002; and finally, the José Scherman Endocrinologist of the Year Award granted by the State Institute of Diabetes and Endocrinology Luiz Capriglione in 2005.

As a candidate for Full Membership to the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Rui Monteiro de Barros Maciel submitted a dissertation by the name of “Prevalence of Phenotypes and Genotypes in the Brazilian Consortium of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 2 (BRASMEN).”
