Sérgio Augusto Pereira Novis

Sérgio Augusto Pereira Novis was born on May 16, 1940, in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the State of Rio de Janeiro, to Aloysio Augusto Novis and Francisca de Freitas Pereira Novis. His great-grandfather was National Academy of Medicine (ANM) Member Manoel Vitorino Pereira, Patron of Chair Number 19, and both his father and grandfather, Dr. Aristides Novis, were Honorary Members of the ANM.  

Following his medical bloodline, Novis enrolled at the Medical and Surgery School of the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UniRio) and graduated in 1963. He then decided to specialize in Neurology at the Pontifical Catholic University’s (PUC-Rio) Graduate Program of Medicine in 1964.

In 1971, Dr. Novis was awarded the prestigious title of Associate Professor whereas in 2011 he received the Emeritus Professor distinction from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). 

He currently serves as a Full Professor of Neurology at both the Souza Marques Medical School and PUC-Rio and works as a clinical neurologist at the Clínica São Vicente hospital as well as at his private practice, all of them in Rio de Janeiro. Novis focuses his research studies on the topics of strokes, multiple sclerosis, and neurological complications stemming from HIV.

In 2008, Dr. Novis’ former students inaugurated an association in his honor, bearing his name. In 2012, in turn, he received the Coruja de Ouro (Golden Owl) trophy during the 50-year anniversary of the Brazilian Academy of Neurology. The accolade is awarded to Brazilian neurologists who have made significant contributions to the development of neurology in the country. There, he additionally has the title of Full Member and served as President from 1989 to 1990. 

Dr. Novis also holds full membership to both the American Academy of Neurology and the Société Française de Neurologie, in addition to composing editorial boards of numerous scientific publications, such as the Archives of Neurology (Chicago) and the Brazilian Journal of Neurology.

To add to his extensive list of achievements, the famed neurologist and professor established the Rio de Janeiro Branch of the Brazilian Society of Medical History in 2007 and was elected President of the Medicine Division of the National Academy of Medicine for the 2015-2017 term.

In 1987, Dr. Novis was elected a Full Member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) and assigned Chair Number 2 of the Medicine Division, whose patron is Miguel da Silva Pereira. He was appointed to the position after fellow ANM Member Milton Fontes Magarão passed away on March 15, 1986. The latter was a Brazilian physician and expert in the fields of tuberculosis and bacteriology. Novis rose to the rank of Emeritus Member in 2016, under ANM President Francisco José Barcellos Sampaio’s term in office.

Upon running for Full Membership to the ANM, Dr. Sérgio Augusto Pereira Novis shared a self-penned essay titled “Central Pontine Myelinolysis (ADAMS-Victor-Mancal Syndrome).”
