Talita Romero Franco

The daughter of Volta Batista Franco and Beatriz Romero Franco, Talita Romero Franco was born on April 1st in Rio de Janeiro in the State of Rio de Janeiro. 

She pursued her undergraduate studies in Medicine at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and graduated in 1964. Later on, she earned her Master’s degree in 1990 and her Ph.D. in 1995, also from UFRJ.

Specialized in Plastic and Restorative Surgery, even though her medical practice consists mostly of aesthetic and reconstructive surgery procedures, Dr. Romero Franco holds the title of Emeritus Full Professor at UFRJ. She additionally conducts surgeries to repair congenital defects such as clefts and microtia. 

Starting from 1991 and for 17 years now, the recognized surgeon serves as Head of the Plastic Surgery Service at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) Clementino Fraga Filho University Hospital, where she devised and established the elective subject of Introduction to Plastic Surgery taught there, in addition to running its Medical Residency Program in that same field. 

Since 2002, she has collaborated in the editorial board of the Brazilian Journal of Plastic Surgery (BJPS), and since 1998, the Journal of the Brazilian College of Surgeons (CBC).

Dr. Romero Franco has been acknowledged with several distinctions throughout her successful career, such as a highly prestigious award conferred by AMIL, a nationwide Brazilian health insurance company, honoring the most lauded physicians in the country in 2008. 

One year prior, she was bestowed the Brazilian College of Surgeons (CBC)-issued Ivo Pitanguy Award; Georges Ariê merit awarded by the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (SBCP) in 1986; José de Mendonça (1970 and 1978) and the Brant Paes Leme (1978) awards, both from the CBC; National Academy of Medicine (ANM)-granted Alvarenga distinction in 1972; and the Manuel Feliciano Award from the now terminated University of Brazil National College of Medicine, current Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1964.

Moreover, she has served as a Full Member of the Brazilian College of Surgeons (CBC) since 1968; Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (SBCP) since 1969; and Fellow of three institutions, namely the American College of Surgeons, International College of Surgeons (1970), and the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (1975).

José Alves Maurity Santos, Patron of Chair Number 37 at the ANM, was Dr. Romero Franco’s great-uncle, the brother of her paternal grandmother, Dr. Judith Adelaide Maurity Santos, who graduated in 1900 and became the first-ever female doctor born in Rio de Janeiro as well as the sixth woman in Brazil to hold the title of doctor.

Dr. Romero Franco has authored two books edited by the Editora Atheneu publishing company: “Cirurgia Estética” (“Aesthetic Surgery”) in 1977; and “Princípios de Cirurgia Plástica” (“Plastic Surgery Principles”) in 2001, in addition to having penned over 120 scientific papers and forty book chapters.

In her submission for Full Membership to the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Talita Romero Franco shared an essay named “The Abdominal Wall as a Donor Area for Grafts and Flaps.”
