Ugo Pinheiro Guimarães

President of the National Academy of Medicine from 1959 to 1961

Ugo Pinheiro Guimarães was born on March 12, 1901, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, to Francisco Pinheiro Guimarães and D. Maria Joaquina Pinheiro Guimarães.

In 1932, he graduated in medicine at the University of Brazil’s (now, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ) National College of Medicine, upon approval and a successful defense of a thesis titled “Surgery and Medicine.” He carried out his medical residency at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. 

The surgeon was elected a Full Member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) on April 11, 1940, after submitting a paper called “Anatomical and Clinical Radiological Study on Normal and Pathological Breasts.” He became an Emeritus Professor in 1970 and chaired the institution during the 1959 to 1961 term. 

Dr. Pinheiro Guimarães held a myriad of positions and was awarded numerous honors throughout his brilliant career, including: Full Professor of Surgery, Pathology and Surgical Propaedeutics (General Pathologies) at the National School of Medicine of the University of Brazil (UFRJ); Professor of Surgical Propaedeutics at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO) School of Medicine and Surgery; Emeritus Professor at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), UNIRIO, and UFRJ; Member of the American College of Surgeons and the Brazilian College of Surgeons, of which he served as President for two terms. 

In addition, he was a Founding Member of the Brazilian Society of Tuberculosis and a Member of the Brazilian Society of Urology, the Pan-American Medical Association, the Societé Internationale de Chirurgie, the International College of Surgeons, and finally, the Brazilian Society of Cancerology.

During his tenure as Head of the Brazilian Cancer Service, Dr. Pinheiro Guimarães was responsible for inaugurating the country’s National Cancer Institute (INCA), which he led from 1970 to 1972. Moreover, he was a Corresponding Member of the Argentine Society of Urology, the Argentine Medical Association, the New York Academy of Medicine, and the Paraguayan Society of Surgeons.

The renowned surgeon represented Brazil in several international Congresses, made up the Norwegian Nobel Committee and received the Brazilian School of Surgeons special award.  

To wrap up a brilliant career, Dr. Pinheiro Guimarães was awarded the Brazilian National Order of Medical in the grade of Grand Cross, the French Legion d’Honneur in the rank of Officer, and the Brazilian Red Cross medal. In addition, he was bestowed the Medal of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States, the Order of Naval Merit, the Clementino Fraga Medal, the Order of Infante D. Henrique of Portugal, and the Belgian Order of Leopold.

Ugo Pinheiro Guimarães passed away on December 29, 1992.
