Walter Araujo Zin

Walter Araujo Zin was born on June 16, 1952, in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the State of Rio de Janeiro. 

He has held Chair Number 100 at the Academia Nacional de Medicina’s (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) Applied Medical Sciences Division since May 5, 2015.

Before that, however, and dating back to 1975, he completed his undergraduate degree in Medicine from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). 

It was also there that he went on to earn a Master’s degree in 1979 and a Ph.D. in 1984, both in Biological Sciences (Biophysics). To top off his medical education, Dr. Zin pursued a postdoctoral program at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, in 1989.

Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Zin has held several titles, such as Founder and Head of the Laboratory of Respiratory Physiology since 1987 and Full Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) from 1993 to 2018. One year later, he was honored with the distinction of Emeritus Professor, also at UFRJ, in addition to having led the Carlos Chagas Filho Institute of Biophysics between 2001 and 2004. 

Dr. Zin further serves as a Visiting Professor at numerous universities in Brazil as well as abroad and has given 350 lectures both at the domestic and international level. Moreover, he has successfully mentored 37 Master’s and 37 Ph.D. candidates, in addition to having provided guidance to eight Brazilian and six foreign post-doctoral students conducting research activities. Zin has also published 250 indexed papers, which resulted in 6,500 citations and an h-index of 38.

Currently, Dr. Zin collaborates as an Ad-hoc reviewer for twenty international scientific journals and is part of editorial boards of the Frontiers in Respiratory Physiology, Frontiers in Network Physiology, and the Annals of the National Academy of Medicine publications. He further works alongside state-run agencies tasked with running scientific activities conducted in Brazil at the state as well as national level.

Other former titles held by the lauded scholar and physician include Full Member of the Advisory Council of Finep, a state-run Brazilian organization that fosters science and technology throughout the country; Superior Council of the Rio de Janeiro State Research Foundation (FAPERJ); Managing Committee of the Sectorial Health Fund; the National Health Council-run Intersectorial Committee for Science and Technology; and the Advisory Board of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (BF-CNPq), which he additionally managed. The physician has also held the title of Emeritus Councilor of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) Minerva Council since 2015.

Dr. Zin is affiliated with the Brazilian Society of Physiology (SBFis), of which he served as President; Brazilian Biophysical Society (SBBf); Brazilian Society of Pulmonology and Phthisiology (Tuberculosis and Respiratory infections); European Respiratory Society, to which he was appointed as the Brazilian Delegate from 2005 to 2008; American Physiological Society; and finally, the American Thoracic Society. He also served as President of the Brazilian Federation on Experimental Biology Societies (FeSBE) for the 2011-2015 term.

Some of the many accolades he has received throughout his career include Full Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the title of the Brazilian government-issued Commander of the National Order of Scientific Merit as well as Honorary Professor at both the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad de la República in Uruguay and the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro.

Regarding his area of expertise, Dr. Walter Araujo Zin works mostly with Respiratory Physiology and Pathophysiology, focusing on the topics of respiratory mechanics; air pollution; artificial ventilation; and disease models.
