Yvon Toledo Rodrigues

Yvon Toledo Rodrigues was born on January 13, 1927, in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the State of Rio de Janeiro, to Anibal José Rodrigues and Laura Toledo Rodrigues.

In 1953, he graduated in Medicine from the then University of Brazil National College of Medicine, and now, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), with a specialization in Pediatrics. His first position as a doctor was that of Lecturer at the Institute of Puericulture (Pediatrics) medical facility, where he taught the subject of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases. 

In 1976, Dr. Rodrigues would be bestowed the prestigious title of Associate Professor of Puericulture (Pediatrics) from both the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UniRio) and the Federal Fluminense University (UFF) in 1976. Shortly afterwards, he was appointed as a Full Professor at the Souza Marques Foundation and also at the Gama Filho University (UGF).

Throughout his remarkable career, Dr. Rodrigues held several positions in a host of Rio de Janeiro-based, Brazilian hospitals, such as Head of the SAMDU Laboratory – a now discontinued President Eurico Dutra-established medical and emergency public home care service – from 1954 to 1955; Head of the Pediatric Ward at the aforementioned institution in 1957; Head of the Getúlio Vargas Hospital’s Pediatric Clinic between 1958 and 1966; and Head of the Pediatric Team at the Hospital de Ipanema in 1974. 

Additionally, he served as Head of the State of Guanabara – now, Rio de Janeiro – Fire Brigade Hospital’s Pediatric Service in 1970 and Head of the Pediatric Department at Bonsucesso Hospital in 1980, in addition to having composed the staff of the Andaraí, Traumato Ortopedia, and Instituto Annes Dias hospitals, among other medical institutions.

Moreover, Dr. Rodrigues has occupied the role of President of the Latin-American Academy of Nutrology (ALAN) since 2002, as well as Member of numerous scientific societies, namely the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics (SBP); Rio de Janeiro Society of Pediatrics (SOPERJ); American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Regional Council of Medicine of the State of Rio de Janeiro (CREMERJ)-run Technical Chamber of Nutrition.

When it comes to his scientific output, Dr. Rodrigues has penned over ten books, including the seminal “Semiologia Pediátrica” (“Pediatric Semiology”) work published by the Guanabara Koogan publishing house, currently in its third edition. 

In addition to these pieces, the renowned physician and scholar has drafted numerous book chapters and collaborated as an editorial staff member of various medical and scientific journals. These include the Journal of Pediatrics; Instituto de Puericultura (Pediatrics Institute) Newsletter; Journal of the Hospital de Siderurgia Nacional (the now discontinued National Steel Company); Brasil-Médico journal; and the Journal of the SAMDU-Nacional Studies Center (also terminated), among other institutions. 

Dr. Rodrigues was also awarded several accolades throughout his prolific career, such as the Nestlé award conferred by the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics (SBP) and the National Academy of Medicine (ANM)-granted Diógenes Sampaio medal. Furthermore, he was acknowledged with the title of Vice-Chancellor of the Order of Malta in 1999 and President of the Smith-Kline Foundation.  

Dr. Rodrigues held several positions at the ANM, serving as Library Director; Second Secretary; Member of the Ismael M. Sodré and the Fernandes Figueira awards commissions; and finally, as Editor of the Annals of the ANM.

In his submission for a Full Member position at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Yvon Toledo Rodrigues submitted a paper named “Distoclusions (Malocclusions) – Chronic Allergic Rhinitis.” On November 26, 2015, the lauded physician and scholar joined the select group of ANM Emeritus Members.
