Jair de Carvalho e Castro was born in July 1957 in the city of Campo Grande in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul. Dating back to his High School days, Carvalho e Castro had always expressed a wish to become a doctor, which would later come to fruition.
In 1977, he moved to the city of São Paulo, where he began to study Medicine and during which time, he was able to interact with highly skilled physicians, thereby enabling him to study medicine based on strict technical, educational, and ethical principles.
Following a host of further professional and specialization programs, in 2001 he established his own private practice in Rio de Janeiro’s Ipanema neighborhood, quickly becoming a role model in his area of expertise.
In 2003, Dr. Carvalho e Castro was entrusted with heading the 2nd Ward of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia General Hospital of Rio de Janeiro. There, he successfully endeavored to train numerous professionals with the appropriate skill sets and eagerness to provide inclusive healthcare services. Their purpose was to teach, conduct research studies and offer academic training, as well as medical residency, graduate programs and outpatient and surgical services.
Today, the lauded surgeon holds the position of Full Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro’s (UFRJ) Faculty of Medicine and teaches in several programs, in addition to providing medical care in his own clinic and performing surgeries.
Dr. Jair de Carvalho e Castro was inducted into the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) on August 11, 2022, after submitting a dissertation titled “Stapedotomy: Auditory Results in Patients with Surgically Treated Otosclerosis in the past 30 years.” At his inauguration ceremony, held on November 11 of the same year, the newly elected Academy Member was welcomed by fellow ANM member Silvano Raia.
