Antonio da Costa

President of the National Academy of Medicine from 1857 to 1859

Named after his father, a known surgeon, and mother Gertrudes Mathilde de Sá e Silva, Antonio da Costa was born on March 15, 1816, in the city of Rio de Janeiro. 

Da Costa studied medicine in Paris and Montpellier in France. Afterwards, he concluded his doctoral studies at the now defunct College of Medicine of Rio de Janeiro (currently, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ), upon submitting and defending a thesis titled “Aperçu sur les gangrènes externs” (“An Overview of External Gangrene”).

The physician was a Full Member of the Imperial Academy of Medicine, now the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), having been sworn in on May 15, 1846. He would then serve as President of the institution the following year, concluding his tenure in 1859. 

Dr. da Costa was bestowed the title of Honorary Surgeon of the Royal Imperial Chamber and additionally served as a surgeon in three medical institutions: the Santa Casa da Misericórdia General Hospital, the Third Order of the Carmelites, and the Ordem da Penitência (Order of Penance) Hospital. 

In addition, he was a physician at the French Society of Beneficence and the French Legation; Member of the Brazilian Historic and Geographical Institute (IHGB); Member of the Imperial Academy of Medicine; Member of the Anatomical Society of Paris; and Member of the Lisbon Medical Sciences Society. 

With regards to honors and distinctions, Dr. Antonio da Costa was granted the Order of Christ in the rank of Commander, the Knight of the Order of the Southern Cross, the French Legion of Honor, and Portugal’s Order of Christ and Order of the Immaculate Conception of Vila Viçosa.

Dr. Antonio da Costa passed away on July 7, 1860.
