Cláudio Tadeu Daniel-Ribeiro

Cláudio Tadeu Daniel-Ribeiro was born on August 19, 1952, in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

He graduated in Medicine in 1976 from the Souza Marques Technical Educational Foundation and completed his Master’s degree in 1981 (Diplôme d´ Études et de Recherches en Biologie Humaine) and two years later, Daniel-Ribeiro obtained his Ph.D. (Doctorat d´ État en Biologie Humaine) from the University of Paris VI (Pierre et Marie Curie), and in 1998, he completed a graduate program at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, France.

Upon submitting his candidacy to the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Daniel-Ribeiro presented a dissertation titled “Optimization of Experimental Infection of Neotropical Saimiri sciureus Primates by Plasmodium falciparum for Research and Development of Anti-Malarial Vaccines.” He then became the sixth youngest ANM Full Member ever on July 15, 2010, and was sworn in on August 31 of that year, receiving the certificate straight from Omar da Rosa Santos, his former Residency Professor at the Gaffrée Guinle University Hospital.

In his induction ceremony, his ANM peers and Honorary Committee members Adolph Hoirisch, Francisco José Barcellos Sampaio, Julio Studart de Moraes, Paulo Marchiori Buss, Pedro Clóvis Junqueira, and Sérgio Augusto Pereira Novis welcomed and escorted him to the Miguel Couto Hall. At the ANM, Dr. Daniel-Ribeiro served as First Secretary under President Francisco Sampaio’s tenure from 2016 to 2017 and as Head of the Archives during President Rubens Belfort’s 2020-2021 term. From 2022 to 2023, he is serving as President of the institution’s Applied Medical Sciences Division.

The esteemed physician and academician currently holds the title of Full Professor at the Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz) Institute, which he ran from 1993 to 1994, as well as heading both the Department of Education and the Department of Immunology, serving as Head of the Malaria Research Laboratory at the latter institution. Said lab is home to the Reference Center for Malaria (CPD-Mal) – a landmark laboratory under the Health Surveillance Secretariat of the Brazilian Ministry of Health (SVS/MS) – when it comes to diagnosing malaria at surrounding areas of the Brazilian Amazon.

Regarding his numerous memberships and accolades, Dr. Daniel-Ribeiro became a Full Member of the Rio de Janeiro Academy of Medicine in 2002 and a Foreign Correspondent Member in 2009, and later on, in 2022, a Foreign Associate of the French National Academy of Medicine. Also, he was commended with France’s Order of Academic Palms in 2013, as well as with a medal awarded by the French Infectious and Tropical Diseases in 2016 and the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz)-issued Henrique Aragão medal in 2022.

In addition, Dr. Daniel-Ribeiro was granted the title of Doctor of Medical Sciences Honoris Causa by the New University of Lisbon in Portugal in 2016 and Full Member of the Rio de Janeiro Academy of Letters in 2019. He also served as President of the International Federation for Tropical Medicine (IFTM) from 2012 to 2016. Moreover, he is a board member of the aforementioned institution and an ad-hoc Advisory Member to the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq); Finep, a government organization that fosters science and technology throughout the county; and the Rio de Janeiro State Research Foundation (FAPERJ), as well as a host of other state-run bodies entrusted with promoting research nationwide.

To further add to his titles, Dr. Daniel-Ribeiro became an Associate Editor of the Scientific Journal of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in 2021 and the Revista Neurociências (Journal of Neuroscience) in 2008; Co-Editor of the Annals of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) in 2022; and alongside Fernando Cupertino of the Federal University of Goiás – UFG, took on the role of Editor for Latin America at the Lisbon-based Portuguese Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (IHMT). Furthermore, the physician and scholar comprises Editorial Boards of several medical journals such as, for instance, Frontiers in Immunology, Parasite, and the Journal of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

Dr. Daniel-Ribeiro has authored nearly 260 scientific publications, including 184 pieces in indexed journals, articles and newspaper op-eds aimed at promoting science, as well as book chapters and introductions, self-authored books, and theses, of which two were approved with the highest honors. Moreover, he penned three dissertations (Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Rio de Janeiro Academy of Medicine, and the National Academy of Medicine – ANM) and edited 382 presentations in both Brazilian and international conferences. He has also been invited as a guest speaker/participant in panels at 237 congresses and science-related events in 46 cities across 14 countries.

The physician and scholar has supervised 35 theses (12 Master’s, 13 Doctoral, and 10 undergraduate final papers) and overseen 67 internships for students, physicians, pharmacists, and biochemists beginning their undergraduate research activities, in addition to teaching refresher courses surpassing 840 months of training. He has further participated in 73 examination boards, coordinated and/or organized 52 scientific events and is responsible for managing over 50 funded projects. Finally, he has carried out 80 technical missions outside of Brazil in 29 cities spread across 13 countries. Dr. Daniel-Ribeiro holds experience and expertise in the field of Parasitology, with a focus on human protozoology, mainly working on the fields of human and experimental simian and murine malaria; Plasmodium falciparum,P. vivax, P. simium and P. berghei; malaria in Amazon and Atlantic rainforests; protective immunity; vaccine trials, and immunopathology of malaria. He is additionally interested in, has published, and conducts ongoing projects related to immune and neural cognition.
