Jacintho Rodrigues Pereira Reis

President of the National Academy of Medicine from 1831 (4th quarter)

Jacintho Rodrigues Pereira Reis was born in 1768 to José Rodrigues Pereira and Joaquina Ignacia da Rose. He graduated in medicine in 1831 from the Rio de Janeiro Academy of Medicine and Surgery (now, the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ). On August 20, 1830, he was appointed to hold the prestigious position of Honorary Surgeon of the Royal Imperial Chamber under the reign of Emperor Dom Pedro I.

The physician served as Head of the Instituto Vacínico Municipal (Municipal Vaccination Institute) and was additionally a Full Member of the Rio de Janeiro Medical and Surgical Society, which later became the Imperial Academy of Medicine. On a June 30, 1829, session, he was sworn in and is deemed one of the institution’s Founding Members. Furthermore, Dr. Rodrigues served as President of the Rio de Janeiro Medical and Surgical Society, which today is the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), in the 4th quarter of 1831.  

Together with his nephew and son-in-law, Dr. Rodrigues founded the Hahnemanniano Institute of Brazil, of which he held the position of President. Moreover, the physician was awarded the title of Officer of the Order of the Rose and the Order of Christ in the rank of Knight. 

Dr. Rodrigues wrote a number of papers and essays, including the “O Amigo da Razão” (“The Friend of Reason”) letter to the editors of the Reverbo publication in 1822; “Reflexões às calunias tecidas pelo cirurgião formado Joaquim José da Silva ao Dr. Joaquim Candido Soares de Meirelles” (“Observations on Slanders made by Surgeon Joaquim José da Silva against Dr. Joaquim Candido Soares de Meirelles”) in 1831; the “Estado da Vacina no Brasil” (“The State of Vaccination in Brazil”) in 1851-1852, published at the Annals of Brazilian Medicine; and finally, the “Medidas Contra o Cólera-Morbus” (“Measures against Cholera Morbus”), also for the country’s medical Annals, in 1856. 

Dr. Jacintho Rodrigues Pereira Reis passed away on March 13, 1882, at the age of 114.
