Karlos Celso de Mesquita

The son of José Maria de Mesquita and Maria Dolores Bersan de Mesquita, Karlos Celso de Mesquita was born on March 24, 1941, in the city of Castelo in the State of Espírito Santo.

As a medical student, Mesquita graduated from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) in 1964, and later on, in 1971, became an Associate Professor of the Orthopedics and Traumatology Department at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UniRio), following a successful defense of his final paper titled “McMurray Osteotomy in the Treatment of Coxarthrosis.” Mesquita then went on to complete his Postdoctoral studies at the University of London from 1988 to 1990, after being awarded a scholarship from the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (CAPES).

The physician began his career working as an Adjunct Professor of Orthopedics and Traumatology at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) from 1975 to 1977. From that same year up to 1980, he served as an Associate Professor in the same subject, until rising to the rank of Full Professor of Orthopedics and Traumatology at UERJ’s Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM) in 1980.

In his distinguished career, Dr. Mesquita has held a host of positions, among them Head of the Orthopedics and Traumatology Department at the Pedro Ernesto University Hospital from 1978 and 1996, which he temporarily stepped down from to take on the role of President of the Brazilian Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology (SBOT) from 1997 to 1998. In addition, he served as Head of the Faculty of Medical Sciences’ Department of Surgical Specialties of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) for two terms: 1986-1989, and 1992-1993. 

The physician was also awarded membership to several medical societies, such as the Brazilian College of Surgeons, Board of Directors of the Association for Rational Treatment of Fractures in 1998 and the Editorial Board of the Brazilian Journal of Orthopedics (RBO) of the Brazilian Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology (SBOT). 

Dr. Mesquita is an experienced physician specialized in Orthopedics and working mostly in arthroplasty, hip, fracture, and trauma medical treatment and procedures. 

Among his many accolades and awards, he was honored with the Benefactor Member distinction from the General Polyclinic of Rio de Janeiro, New Headquarters merit granted by the Brazilian College of Surgeons, and the Brazilian Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology-bestowed (SBOT) Order of Merit. 

Additionally, the recognized physician received medals and honors from the Portuguese Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology in 1984, Argentine Association of Orthopaedics and Traumatology in 1997, and the Peruvian Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (SPOT).


In his submission for a Full Member seat at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Karlos Celso de Mesquita presented an essay by the name of “Early Mobilization after Osteosynthesis in Transtrochanteric Fractures.”
