Paulo Niemeyer Soares Filho

The son of Paulo Niemeyer Soares and Maria Pia Rafaela Guilhermina Alice Torres Guimarães, Paulo Niemeyer Soares Filho was born on April 9, 1952, in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the State of Rio de Janeiro. 

He studied at the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and graduated in 1975. Shortly after, he began his residency in Neurosurgery at the Dr. Paulo Niemeyer Brain Institute of the of the now defunct Dr. Eiras psychiatric hospital. During his first year of residency, Niemeyer Soares Filho dedicated himself to studying Neurology and Neuroradiology at the English National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN), Queen Square, of the University College London, where he additionally interned as a Post-Graduate Fellow.

In 1977, the young neurosurgeon was appointed as Head of the Rio de Janeiro-based Santa Casa da Misericórdia General Hospital’s Neurological Computed Tomography Department, and one year later, was invited to work as a Neurosurgeon at the Souza Aguiar Municipal Hospital. 

In 1979, he brought a new, groundbreaking microsurgical approach from the United States to Brazil for treating trigeminal neuralgia, a method he became acquainted with during his time at the University of Gainesville in Florida. At the end of that same year, Dr. Niemeyer Soares Filho was designated as Head of the Neurosurgery Institute at the Santa Casa da Misericórdia General Hospital of Rio de Janeiro.

In 1980, in turn, Dr. Niemeyer Soares Filho was approved in a diploma-based admissions examination to hold the position of Specialist in Neurosurgery from both the Brazilian Medical Association (AMB) and the Brazilian Society of Neurosurgery (BSN).

Two years later, he would be approved in another admissions test, this time, to serve as a Full Member at the Brazilian College of Surgeons (CBC). 

In 1983, Niemeyer Soares Filho was appointed as an Adjunct Professor as well as a Coordinator of the Carlos Chagas Postgraduate Medical Institute’s Postgraduate Program in Neurosurgery, and still that year, he was unanimously approved by an examination board to take on the position of Head of the Paulista School of Medicine’s (EPM) Neurosurgery division.

The following year, Dr. Niemeyer Soares Filho completed the Use of Lasers in Neurological Surgery program offered by the Mayfield Neurological Institute in Cincinnati in the United States, under the helm of Professor John Tew. That same year and already as a Founding Member, he was elected President of the Society of Neurosurgery of Rio de Janeiro (SNCRJ), in addition to joining the Higher Council of the Rio de Janeiro Medical and Surgical Society. 

Continuing the lauded neurosurgeon’s extensive list of titles and positions, he was voted to join the philanthropic Santa Casa da Misericórdia General Hospital of Rio de Janeiro, whereas in 1986, he finished first in a title-based evaluation to serve as a Full Member of Neurosurgery at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro’s (PUC-Rio) graduate medical school. 

The next year, he was admitted as an International Member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. In 1989, in turn, Dr. Niemeyer Soares Filho would be appointed as a Member of the World Federation of Neurological Societies-helmed Neurotraumatology Committee. 

In addition, Dr. Niemeyer Soares Filho served as Vice-President of the PUC-Rio Graduate Program in Medicine for two terms, namely 1992-1994 and 1994-1996, and as Dean of the same institution from 1996 to 1998, and from 1998 to 2000.

He currently occupies the position of Medical Director of the Paulo Niemeyer State Brain Institute (IEC) and is a Member of the Brazilian Cancer Foundation Board. 

During his candidacy to secure a Full Member position at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Paulo Niemeyer Soares Filho shared a dissertation entitled “Experiences with Intracranial Aneurysm Surgeries in the Posterior Fossa.”
